Just let it go already! I wish it were easy to let go of the need to try and get as much done as possible in a single day, but the reality is the list never ends. Here are some tips I’ve learned about how to survive the never ending list of To-Do’s.
7 Survival Tips When The List Never Ends
Use the 60 second rule. It will help things from building up by the end of the week. Take 60 seconds and complete a task right away instead of leaving it undone for days. This is a tip I learned from reading the Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin.
I’ve cured my habit of leaving 12 pairs of shoes in the living room each week. Now I put them right away when I take them off.
Unplug. Turn off the tv. Hide your phone. Get off Facebook. All these digital connections are distracting your focus to get your tasks done.
Say No! Saying no isn’t always easy, but there are 3 simple questions you can ask youself to be sure it’s an extra task you should be taking on.
Take tiny bites. Try to turn what feels like a monster project into tiny little pieces. Make a list of the steps to complete the project and feel good about only getting 1 of those pieces done. Maybe it’s only 5 minutes worth of work that you can get done. Every little bit helps!
Focus on one thing at a time. I’m the worst culprit at doing 5 things at once. But if I get distracted, multitasking can often lead for the need to start a task over. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying multitasking is bad, but when you need to get something done focus is key.
Skip anything on your list you don’t feel like doing. It will be there tomorrow. Go for a walk instead. For me, I need a break sometimes to just refocus. On days I work from my home office, I take a break to shower and sneak out of PJs before my husband gets home!
Be realistic! You cannot possibly get the 432 things all done in 1 day. Prioritize if there are deadlines associated to some tasks and then pick the top 3-5 items. If you tell yourself that you aren’t allowed to check Facebook or your email until after you get at least your top 3 done then checking FB will feel like a reward!
