Remember that old saying about apples and doctors? Eat an Apple A Day….to keep doctors away! It’s true! Learn the great health benefits and other ways you can enjoy it.
From HealthDiaries.com, here are 7 reasons to eat apples:
1. Bone Protection
2. Asthma Help
3. Alzheimer’s Prevention
4. Lower Cholesterol
5. Cancer Prevention (Lung, Breast, Colon, Liver)
6. Diabetes Management
7. Weight Loss
As I said earlier, there are other ways to enjoy apples. When the Fall season hits, I always look forward to nearby destinations like Apple Hill, and luckily, Cory and I live close by. There are 47 stops among the Apple Hill ranches including orchards, wineries, pumpkin patches, and even a brewery. We went for an outing there last weekend and came home full of delicious apple pie and toting two huge boxes of apples. Our favorite spot was Larsen Apple Barn. They have a good selection of apples to buy (and offer free tastes), a cafe where we munched on sandwiches and warm apple pie, and a creek where many families were picnicking. It would have been a perfect afternoon if not for the crowds, which brings me to my Apple Hill Tips:
#1 – Go on a weekday if you can. The weekend crowds make it difficult to find parking.
#2 – Buy an apple pie (or 2!) to go. They will last in the freezer and be perfect for holiday company. You do not want to go home empty handed.
#3 – Take a look at the apple ‘seconds’. These boxes were twice as big for the same price and their only imperfection was a few spots or bruises. Great for baking!
My husband has big plans for our two big boxes of seconds. He is going to make and can applesauce like he did with his parents growing up. I’ll be sure to let you know how (and if) it turns out. This will be quite an adventure!
If you need extra motivation to eat those apples, here are some yummy ideas: apple pie (the inside is healthy, right? 🙂 ), apple butter, apple sauce, apple fritters, apple muffins, caramel apples (perfect for Halloween!).
