The Edinburgh Castle sits at one end of the Royal Mile, or their main street, in Edinburgh Scotland. At the opposite end is the Holyrood Palace, home of the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward, otherwise known as the Queen of England’s husband. Our second day in Edinburgh we started at the Edinburgh Castle, at the top end of the Royal Mile.

It was a nice but brisk morning and we were all glad we had our jackets.

The war memorial at Edinburgh Castle was quite moving. We weren’t allowed to take photos on the inside (of course!) but the memorial had book after book lining the walls where you could read the names of the soldiers who lost their lives since WW1. Outside, they even had a memorial for the soldiers’ dogs.

We walked the Royal Mile and at the end of the day and entered Holyrood Palace. Holyrood Palace is the setting for state ceremonies and official entertaining.

Holyrood Abbey is a ruined abbey of the Canons Regular (one of the oldest Latin Rite orders) and was founded in 1128. It’s protected as a historical monument.

The ruined nave of the abbey church has a window at the far end that is still in tact.

The grounds of Holyrood Palace were immaculate. I would love to have a yard that looked this amazing!
