Hello Living5x5 readers! Today’s Health and Wellness post is on one of my favorite subjects, Farmers’ Markets. I want to remind all you out there who are trying to eat healthier that there are Farmers’ Markets all over Sacramento and there is one almost every day of the week. These Certified Farmers’ Markets are a great way to eat healthy and locally. Not only can you get amazing produce but you can usually get your hands on flowers, olive oils, nuts, breads and other delicious fresh food items at these markets. There is a great website called California Grown that shares a lot of information on what it means to be a Certified Farmers’ Market and also lists Market Times and Locations. Be sure to check that out for a Farmers’ Market near you.
Here’s a little snippet from the website that explains why these markets are so great. ‘Although the Certified Farmers’ Markets are strictly governed by the high quality and growing standards of California, their farmers can bring field and tree ripened fruits and vegetables which are too delicate for the packing and shipping processes of traditional food distribution systems. In addition, consumers are assured of obtaining only California grown fruits and vegetables, fresh and in season, at attractive prices.‘
When the Farmers’ Market at Fremont Park on16th and P Street come alive, so do I during my lunch break. Talk about a nice little walk and getting some great deals on fresh fruits and veggies. I took advantage of these deals as I needed some berries for a pie I was making.
The blackberries I bought today almost made my husband cry because they’re so good. One basket was $3.50, two baskets for $6, or three baskets for $7! Trust me, that is way better than grocery store prices and the berries are at least twice as good!
So when you get a chance, and are in need of fresh fruits or veggies, grab your reusable canvas shopping bag and get to a Certified California Farmers’ Market today! It’s so worth the time and effort.

I love the market under the freeway on Sundays. So much to choose from! There’s nothing like the produce from California!
