I’ve always wondered why people ask ‘So what are your New Year’s resolution?’ And if you say you don’t have any (or in my case that I don’t do resolutions!) – you’re often looked at like a loser without a plan.
To explain my answer, I inevitably have to ask: What is a resolution? Well, by definition it’s ‘the condition or quality of being resolute; firmness or determination; something resolved or determined; decision.’ What’s the good in making a decision if you have no plan to execute your decision?
I’m gonna lose weight. Well don’t we all have that as a ‘resolution’ all the time, every day of the year?
I’m gonna travel more. Yeah in my daydreams!
I’m gonna take more time for me. Hmmm….is there 25 hours in the day?
Rather, I make goals to actively shoot for something I want to accomplish. My definition of a goal is ‘the aim or object towards which an endeavor is directed; the terminal point of a journey or race.’
So with that in mind – here is one of my new goals: I’m going to read more! And how exactly will I do that? By creating a book club. I’ve invited 9 friends to join – so there will be 10 of us, each selecting a book, so it will be 10 books that we read this year. And the extra bonus is that we all get to enjoy each others company every 4-6 weeks when we meet to discuss our latest book.
The ‘I’m going to travel more’ is in the works, too. Having it be a goal because I’m always so tied up with work, but I know Europe is on my mind, and I’m looking forward to this trip!
There is a difference between resolution and goals, and as you go down your list, make it more realistic so you can have a better outcome. That way, you won’t have to set the same cliche resolutions every year, and have something better to look forward to.
