Our United Kingdom vacation itinerary

Our United Kingdom vacation itinerary

There is just so much to tell you about our trip to the United Kingdom that I thought I would just start with an overview of all the places we went and then tell you about each place in later posts. We started our trip in London where we spent almost a week. Yes, I will be posting about the Royal Wedding. From London, we took a train to York for a few days, then a train to Edinburgh for a few days. We rented a car in Edinburgh and drove through Scotland staying in Inverness, the Isle of Sky, in a castle near Oban, ferrying over to the Isle of Mull, and eventually back to Edinburgh where we caught a plane home.

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles…and Ferries could sum up our trip. It was quite an experience to take a real train (the dinner train in Napa doesn’t count). With a train coming into and departing out of the London station every few minutes, it was madness to learn how to navigate around within the few minutes we had before it departed the station. Once on board, it was very pleasant and relaxing. I’ve ridden ferries before where you drive on board (in Seattle) but I’ve never seen the likes of ferries where semi-trucks drove on board. The cargo hold of this ship was massive and the number of cars was astonishing. Driving around, on the wrong side of the road with the steering wheel on the wrong side, was fun, too. Cory and Rob were the only brave ones. Val and I were the mother hens who kept chanting ‘stay to the left’. More on all this in the coming days.

For now, I’ll leave you with a few pictures of our first night in London when we rode the London Eye.

Similar to the brief overview of our itinerary that I just gave you, the London Eye is a great way to get an overview of the city of London from high in the sky.

Here’s one more of those ‘hold the camera out at arm’s length’ photos that I love of all four of us. Big Ben and the River Thames are in the background

Here’s a view of the London Eye at night. It sits right next to the Marriott which is one of the places we stayed.
