The recipe of the week is a twist on French Dip Sandwiches made with turkey meat instead. I found the Turkey French Dip Sandwiches recipe in Clean Eating’s Classic Comfort Foods magazine, which is exceptionally good and tasty.
With only 8 ingredients, this was another easy hands-on recipe that took about 20 minutes prep time.
Ingredients
- 3/4 C chopped onion
- 1 shallot, chopped
- 2 C low-sodium chicken broth
- 8 oz deli-sliced turkey meat
- 4 whole wheat sandwich rolls (toasted)
- 1 Tbsp extra-virgin oil
- 1 Tbsp whole-wheat flour
- Sea salt and fresh ground pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a large, shallow skillet, heat oil on medium. Add onion and shallot and saute, stirring occasionally for 2 minutes. Sprinkle flour over top and cook, stirring, for 1 minute.
- Gradually whisk in broth in a steady stream. Bring sauce to a gentle boil; reduce to simmer for 1 to 2 minutes, until sauce thickens slightly. Season with salt and pepper. Cover and keep warm until ready to serve.
- In a medium bowl, toss turkey with salt and pepper. Using tongs, dip turkey into warm onion sauce and place between each roll, dividing evenly. Serve with remaining onion on the side for dipping.
Dipping the turkey into the sauce already makes for a messy sandwich, as the sauce tends to drip out as you eat. No need for additional dipping sauce. I also added a 1/2 slice of Swiss cheese, which I put onto the toasted rolls so that the cheese melts a bit. Perfect for a weekend brunch, or a Friday night dinner! Yum!
