Last week we had book club. This month I was the host and we were discussing the book I selected called The Life Before Her Eyes by Laura Kasischke.
It was one of the fastest reads we’ve had so far. The discussion was great! We had 9 of us there and everyone had an opinion. The book touches upon many topics related to both teenage years as well as middle-age years. We covered love, marriage, regret, hopes and desires. We even had a great conversation about the author and her method of telling the story and the technical side of writing. The night ended with a conversation surrounding ‘sex in a gray minivan’. (Thanks Shanan!)
The basic premise of the book was about a choice – if you were faced with a choice between kill me or kill my best friend when a gunman points a gun at you both and says ‘who should I kill?’ What would you say? The line between life and death is so narrow and we often forget to appreciate life and living.
While some people did not like the book, they were looking forward to the discussion as they knew it would be well rounded. Many people, including myself, liked the book. They made a movie out of this book (same title) and many of us made a point to watch the movie after reading the book, which also lead down the path of great conversation about why they changed certain aspects for the public masses who’d watch the movie. I’d personally recommend the book over the movie.
