In September, we got together at Kerry’s house to discuss “Room” by Emma Donoghue. It was Amazon’s Best of the Month September 2010. The Room is about Jack and his Ma, living in a single room. For Jack, it’s all he knows, it’s his home. For his Ma, it’s a prison where she’s been captive for more than 5 years.
This book is told from the perspective of Jack, a 5 year old. At first, it was a bit difficult to read, getting into the word choices and fragmented sentences, as a 5 year old may speak, but after 20-30 pages you get the hang of it.
Jack’s mom had done an amazing job to make this room a world for Jack; teaching him and entertaining him for long hours every day. Jack would never have known that his life wasn’t normal. Until the day that Ma explained that there was a world beyond their one room and he was the key to their escape. Without wanting to give too much away for those that want to read this book, while there was much discussion in our group about the time they spent in the room, there was even more discussion about the time spent after the Room.
Some in our group were a bit worried that this book might be a too disturbing to read, but I think in the end, we found it to be a great book for discussion. I’m not sure I would have ever picked this one up on my own, but I’m glad it was on our list.
